It’s Fasting…Don’t just starve yourself

Oh Man, I’m convicted by this one…

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

1 Corinthians 6:19

Of course, the whole Paleo thing, and taking better care of ourselves is a touchy subject with us….

We were so good the first time we went down this path so I don’t get why we keep having so many problems! But…that’s not the topic for today, so aside from that ridiculousness…I’m totally encouraged by this verse.

We often look at this verse and offer up the obligatory encouragement to keep ourselves clean and not defile ourselves, just as we wouldn’t defile the temple of God. But I’m more concerned with what happens IN God’s temple. Just a couple actions that occurred in God’s temple…Worship, Prayer, and Sacrifice. So how can Worship, Prayer, and Sacrifice be exercised in our bodies, since we are the temple of the Holy Spirit?

When we fast, we are sacrificing something, food in this case, to allow us to draw closer to God. The sacrifice of something that is life sustaining in this world, will allow us to draw closer to the One who is life sustaining for all eternity.

But it’s not just about avoiding food, it’s about prayer and worship.

Fasting is a form of worship, it causes us to place God where he belongs in our lives, ahead of everything else. We should fill this time with worship for our Father, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who gives us strength to do everything.

And fasting is a form of Prayer, in fact, as we fast we should be replacing the food (or whatever item we fast from) with prayer. Use the time and energy you would have used on that activity should be focused to prayer.

Fasting without prayer and worship isn’t fasting, it’s starving yourself! So we need to make sure that we spend this time in prayer and worship.

BUT there is one thing we need to remember when we fast. This isn’t about us, this isn’t about the great things that we’re doing for the Lord. This is about Him and the great things that HE is doing.  Let’s look at what Jesus has to say about fasting…

And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you

Matthew 6:16-18

We need to fast quietly…with humility, in a private way. We need to live our lives as we normally do, people should look at us and not notice anything different when we’re fasting. The fast we take is between Us and God, so let’s give him the Glory by leaving it that way.

I love you guys. See you later today!

  1. It’s a shame that Christians seem to think fasting is for material rewards on Earth – when it is designed for God’s wisdom and understanding in our lives
