The Spirit Cleanse

But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Ephesians 4:20-24 (NLT)

You know what’s really funny?  The way I feel after getting a haircut, or when I wear brand new clothes. I know it’s weird, or at least I think it’s weird, but there is just something about newness that makes you feel clean, confident, and…New!

At work on Monday, after getting our haircut last weekend, everyone noticed and made comments on it.  I even had a guy from accounting tell me that last week he thought it looked like I was shaggier than normal…Thanks for being honest Ed!

Anyway, does the haircut change who I am? Of course not! Does it make me better at my job? I wish! Do I appear more professional…probably. Regardless, in Ephesians 4, Paul instructs the church to throw off…not just set down…their sinful nature and former way of life, and to let the Spirit RENEW their thoughts and attitudes.  There is something about shedding the old nature (getting rid of the old hair) and putting on something new that refreshes you. This is ESPECIALLY true with the Spirit of the Lord. Just like having a fresh haircut or new clothes causes others to notice something different about you, and if you’ve been renewed by the Spirit, others will notice a change in your life!

We were all born with a sin nature, it consumes us, it robs us of our peace, and eats away at our soul, but until we know the Lord we don’t even realize the mess we’re in! When we learn about Jesus, and give our whole being over to him. When we make the decision to turn from what we were in the flesh, to who we are in him, we are able to throw off those old clothes, we’re able to shed that excess hair, and get rid of the dirty old rags.  When we submit to him, the Holy Spirit will begin to renew our thoughts and attitudes!

Once we’ve reached point of being renewed, are we always going to feel great and be a smiley drone? No way! Let’s be honest, We’re going to have days where we are living in the Spirit, and days where we’re living in the flesh. The key is to recognize when we’re in the flesh, and change the course that we’re on. Pray, spend some time with the Lord, listen to worship music, SERVE SOMEONE ELSE. Being intentional about these things will help us live a life in the Spirit and keep that old stuff from creeping in and weighing us down again.

I love you guys, I hope these words are an encouragement.
