Gift…in a Holy Spirit Wrapper

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves.  Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father”.

Romans 8:15 (NLT)

This verse is so encouraging, and there is a TON packed into just a few words.  Yet, the biggest encouragement to me is that it say’s we have received God’s Spirit rather than a spirit of fear.

If you notice, it say’s “you have not received” and “you received”.  It does NOT say “You don’t have” or “You have”.  This is something so little, and so easily passed over, but let’s stop and think about this.

In order for you to receive a gift, someone else must first buy it, make it, or have it and then give it to you.  So we need to remember that the spirit of fear and the Spirit of God are not just arbitrarily in us, they are GIVEN to us. The spirit of fear is given to us by none other than Satan, the ruler of this world who seeks to kill, steal, and destroy. The Spirit of God is given by…God of course!  The Holy Spirit is part of God, He is a member of the Holy Trinity, just as Jesus and God are.  And just as God gave us His Son Jesus Christ to die on a cross and pay for our sin, He gave us His Spirit to walk with us and to be our guide on this earth.

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.

John 14:16

There is nothing we have done to earn this gift, but God has given His Spirit to us freely.  This is a gift we have been given as adopted children in God’s family.  He loves us, He wants us to be with Him, and through the blood of Jesus He has adopted us and made us his own.  So the Spirit of God is in us, He helps us, He encourages us, He gives us strength, He lightens our burdens, and He will always be with us.

So in times when we’re scared, sad, stressed, frustrated, or just plain tired, let’s lean on the Lord and realize, that the Spirit is in us, He is with us, and He has overcome this world.
